The 5 Best Superfoods to Add to a Smoothie

Try adding a few of these unique superfoods to boost the nutritional value of your favorite smoothie.
When consumed in moderation, smoothies can be an excellent source of vitamins and minerals. You can include loads of healthy ingredients together in one smoothie, and there are literally hundreds of different smoothie recipes you can create.
If you want to gain maximum benefits from adding smoothies to your daily diet, adding a few “super foods” can really help to boost the nutritional potential of your smoothies.
Here are 5 of the best superfoods to add to a smoothie.
1. Chia Seeds
Chia seeds are by far one of the best super foods out there. They’re also really easy to add to your daily diet too. They contain high levels of omega-3 fatty acids, protein and fiber, so they’ll keep you feeling full and satisfied for a long time.
One of the best things about chia seeds, however, is the fact they don’t really have much of a taste – so you can add them to a wide range of dishes, including smoothies, without even realizing you’re eating (or drinking) them. They also provide a “thickening” quality to liquids, which of course is very helpful in a smoothie.
2. Goji Berries
Goji berries are best known for their natural healing properties. They contain amino acids, antioxidants and plenty of different vitamins and minerals.
They add a nice sweet taste to smoothies and also give them a fantastic color! Their most important benefits, however, are their supposed ability to fight off diseases, improve your eyesight and help balance hormone levels.
3. Aloe Vera
Okay, so this one may seem a little odd, but this amazing plant comes with some pretty impressive benefits. While they’re not super-easy to find in most areas, aloe vera leaves make a great addition to smoothies.
The health benefits provided include inflammation reduction, maintaining good blood sugar levels and cholesterol lowering properties. They also have a gel-like consistency, which can help to make your smoothies smooth and creamy. If you can’t find the leaves, aloe vera gel is often sold as a dietary aid.
4. Cacao
Want your smoothies to taste delicious? Cacao provides a strong, dark chocolate taste that makes you feel you’re having an indulgent treat!
Cacao is basically raw chocolate and it boasts extremely powerful anti-inflammatory properties and contains a wide range of antioxidants.
5. Cinnamon
Cinnamon is one of the lesser-known super foods, but it can also provide a tasty kick to your smoothie recipes. It can help combat bacteria and some studies show that it may also help to lower cholesterol.
It’s worth noting that cinnamon best complements creamy smoothie recipes. Its sweet and spicy flavor is unique and can really liven up breakfast smoothies.
There are lots of healthy superfoods, but the ones listed above are considered some of the best to add to smoothie recipes due to their unique flavors or textures. Just remember to enjoy them in moderation, particularly if you’re using lots of fruits or juices, which are typically high in sugar.
