Summer is almost here, and that means pot-lucks, backyard barbecues, and picnics – none of which would be complete without a cold, refreshing beverage in your hand! Unfortunately, most of the beverage offerings at these events tend to be sugary, chemical-filled soft drinks, which may taste good at the time but won’t do any favors for your health.

This summer, resolve to make a switch to a healthier option: homemade herbal-based beverages!

For example, this delicious basil ginger limeade is packed with fresh, summery flavors and healthy ingredients like anti-inflammatory ginger, and basil, which helps aid digestion. Plus, it’s super easy to whip up a big batch ahead of time for your next summer potluck or barbecue! Instead of reaching for a sugary soda, next time, try a delicious herbal beverage instead.

Ginger Basil Limeade Recipe

Ingredients:
  • 2 cups water
  • 2 tablespoons fresh, chopped basil
  • 1 tablespoon fresh grated ginger
  • ½ cup honey
  • ½ cup lime juice

Directions:

  1. Place ginger, basil and water into a pot with a lid on it. I use stainless steel Revere pots; glass and enamel pots also work well
  2. Bring water and herbs just barely to a boil and then immediately turn off the fire
  3. Let basil and ginger steep for 1-2 hours
  4. Using a metal strainer, remove the herbs from the tea
  5. Gently re-heat tea and add honey
  6. Add lime juice and garnish
  7. Drink chilled for a great summer refreshment (or warm in the winter)
  8. The shelf life of this tea is about two days if kept covered in the refrigerator
